QUICK DEV TIP #89 UE4 / UE5 - LOCK IN PLACE

If you are building out levels today’s tip is one for you!

Did you know you can lock assets in your level in place so you can’t accidentally move them?

If you would prefer to watch my video version, check it out here

It’s really simple to do, Right-click an asset in your level (in my case a static mesh cube). Then head down to Transform and click on the Lock Actor Movement option.

…and it’s as easy as that. Now if you try to move the asset you won’t be able to and you will see we get a little not allowed UI popup on alongside the gizmo.

This can be great if you have some important assets in your level that you don’t want to accidentally move. It seems like this works with all assets in level. For example below we have a Static Mesh, a Blueprint Actor as well as a Reflection Capture asset.

We can Unlock it so we can move the asset by doing the same process again. Right-click on a locked asset, go to Transform, then untick Lock Actor Movement.

This is the same process in Unreal 5, it’s just a little nicer for a couple of reasons. The right-click menu is a little more condensed and also when the asset is locked, the movement gizmo is hidden, to better give feedback that it’s locked.

This can come in real handy and its definitely one to try out next time you are working on a level
