QUICK DEV TIP #27 UE4 - Multiple Content Browsers

Today’s quick dev tip is useful when building out your level, especially if you find yourself constantly navigating between a bunch of different folders looking for specific assets.

Did you know that you can have multiple content browser windows open at the same time?

If you would prefer to watch the video version, check it out here

This is a very simple one. From your main editor viewport go up to Window and find Content Browser (under the general category).

You will see that you can have up to 4 separate content browser windows active at any one time. However, personally, I find 4 is a bit much and normally stick to 2. One docked at the bottom of my main viewport and the second floating off on my second monitor.

In my example below you can see how it can be useful as I am easily able to drag out the meshes I want from my floating content browser window and then straight after drag materials onto my meshes directly from my other content browser.

An interesting thing to know about is that you can actually lock a window to its current view, by clicking the little padlock icon in the top right of each panel. This means that the currently viewed folder/assets will not change. If I was to browse to an asset it wouldn’t affect the locked window.

If both my content browser windows are locked and I try to browse to an asset on something in my level, it instead opens up a new content browser window (within the limit of 4 max).

This is one of those little tips which can be really useful and help speed things up when you are building out a level. I hope you find it useful!
